Summer Youth Academy Recap: Empowering the Next Generation of College Graduates

Updated: Sep 25

We are thrilled to share the success of this year's Summer Youth Academy (SYA), the vibrant and impactful program under the 1300 Campaign Initiative. SYA is dedicated to immersing students in an authentic college experience, providing them with the tools, knowledge, and inspiration to pursue a four-year degree.

SYA Member Phaey Yang was presented with a leadership award by UC Merced for his dedication and engagement in the program this year.

This summer, we proudly sent over 95 brothers to participate in the week-long SYA, hosted in collaboration with UC Merced and CSU Stanislaus. This marks the third annual 1300 Campaign in the Northern Central Valley, and the impact continues to grow. Our brothers had the unique opportunity to live on the UC Merced campus, where they engaged in hands-on learning, college and career readiness workshops, mentorship sessions, leadership development activities, and even a visit to the awe-inspiring Yosemite National Park.

Throughout the week, our brothers dove deep into what it takes to gain admission to UC and CSU schools, participated in a chemistry lab, and gained insights from current students and faculty on how to succeed in higher education. A highlight of the week was earning certificates for completing the "Stop the Bleed" training—a critical nationwide initiative that equips individuals with life-saving skills in emergency situations. Additionally, leadership workshops provided our brothers with the opportunity to discover their unique leadership styles and explore strategies for addressing issues like bullying and homelessness in their communities.

For many, the journey began with uncertainty about whether college was the right path. By the end of the week, however, the transformation was evident. Some brothers formed concrete plans for their futures, feeling more confident and motivated than ever before.

Here’s what a couple of our brothers had to say about their experience:

SYA participants got the chance to visit Yosemite National Park

Malachi McDonald: “I had a lot of fun connecting and hanging out with new people in a more diverse community. This helped me learn more about college eligibility, sports eligibility, and more. Overall, it was an amazing trip.”

Ronald Winzer: “It was fun. It helped me learn about options I have for college. It also helped me understand that you need to be mentally prepared for college because when I was younger, I didn’t think I wanted to go. However, this trip really helped me get into the mindset I need.”

We extend our deepest gratitude to our partners who made this transformative experience possible. Together, we are paving the way for the next generation of college graduates and leaders. Thank you for your continued support in this mission!
