From Resolution to Reality: Modesto City Schools Accelerates Toward 1300 Campaign Goals

Since signing the 1300 Campaign resolution last year, Modesto City Schools (MCS) has made significant strides in aligning with the campaign's policy priorities. A notable achievement has been the establishment of new partnerships with higher education institutions, particularly with the University of California, Merced (UC Merced). This partnership includes an automatic admissions agreement, ensuring that students who meet specific criteria can seamlessly transition to UC Merced, thereby increasing college enrollment rates. This initiative aligns with the 1300 Campaign's goals by directly addressing accessibility to higher education.

MCS has also encouraged the implementation of supportive programs that align with the 1300 Campaign. These programs are designed to provide comprehensive support to students, ensuring they have the necessary resources and guidance to succeed academically and personally. For instance, mentorship programs, tutoring services, and college readiness workshops have been introduced to help students navigate the path to higher education. By promoting these supportive measures, MCS is actively working towards creating an environment that fosters academic success and aligns with the campaign's vision of equitable education.

To better prepare students for college, MCS has focused on enhancing the college readiness of its students. This includes providing rigorous academic coursework, Advanced Placement (AP) classes, and dual enrollment opportunities that allow students to earn college credits while still in high school. Additionally, MCS has invested in college counseling services to help students understand the college application process, financial aid opportunities, and career planning. These efforts are crucial in ensuring that students are well-equipped for the demands of higher education.

Furthermore, MCS has undertaken equity audits to identify and address barriers faced by young men of color (YMOC). These audits involve a thorough examination of school policies, practices, and outcomes to uncover systemic inequities that hinder the success of YMOC. By understanding these barriers, MCS can implement targeted interventions to support these students more effectively. The insights gained from equity audits inform the development of strategies that promote equity and inclusion, ensuring that all students have the opportunity to thrive.

Modesto City Schools' efforts to align with the 1300 Campaign policy priorities have been multifaceted, focusing on partnerships, supportive programs, college readiness, and equity audits. These initiatives collectively contribute to creating a more equitable and supportive educational environment, in line with the campaign's goals.
